From the Director of Student Ministries - The Student Ministries department provides students with opportunities to put into practice what is taught in the classroom and what is experienced through chapel services in keeping with the college's mission (to educate and equip Christians for Spirit-empowered ministry in the church and in the world.
Weekly Student Ministries involvement is a requirement of all students taking 9 credits or more per semester. While fulfilling this requirement, students have opportunities to be trained and mentored by those involved in ministry. At the same time, this training involves real hands-on ministry participation that impacts lives in the process.
Only eternity can tell the full story of the impact that our students have in these ministry opportunities. I am encouraged when I hear comments from churches and organizations: "We greatly appreciate all of the students that helped out this semester. They are a great bunch of young men and women. I see passion and dedication in what they do." "I really appreciated the team that you sent us this past semester. They did an excellent job and left a great testimony with the staff and students at the high school!" This tells me that our students are successfully growing and developing as they "test the waters" in their areas of ministry, with results that can often impact the students as much or more than the organization and the people to whom they are ministering.

From the Student Ministries President - Not only do students have the opportunity to learn about ministry at Summit, but they also have the opportunity to put what they learn into action. Each week students have to participate in a ministry of their choice. This helps them to gain knowledge and understanding of what their future ministry could be like.
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself". Jesus said that these two key things are the greatest commandments. It's not surprising that when Jesus gave the great commission (Matthew 28:19), He said to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This shows how the first and second greatest commandments relate to each other. Jesus wants us to love our neighbors while telling them about God who should be first in their lives.

As a student involved in ministry, there can potentially be life-changing effects. The amount of spiritual growth and maturity that can take is extraordinary. For myself, the student ministry experience has definitely helped me to grow as a leader.
Feel free to contact me about ministry ideas or for options on what ministries are available. If you are a part of a ministry that is currently seeking student leaders, contact me for more information.

Some of our 2010-2011 Ministries in Action
|
Drama - The drama team is led by Lillian Hildebrandt. Basically we pick certain messages we want to portray through skits or drimes. We do this through student written skits or skits found on the internet. We meet once a week to practice and go through each drama/drime. We perform usually on a weekend either at a youth night or at a Sunday morning service. ~ Bryan Scheffel, Drama Team Member, 2010-2011
Union Gospel Mission - In my Sophomore year, I would serve at UGM with a small team from Summit once a week. It was a great opportunity to meet the homeless and the needy all in one place. We had many opportunities to sit with them and to hear their life stories, as well as to share our stories with them. God would often bring opportunities to share about His love for them. The best part is that we were able to build relationships with some people and chat with them every week. Not only did we serve the guests at UGM but also the wonderful staff who have committed their lives to these people. We often helped them cook and clean and serve dinner to over one hundred people. I am so thankful for my experience with Union Gospel Mission! ~ Nicole Carroll, UGM Team Leader, 2010-2011
FIRE - Ladner Youth - We're all about providing an environment for teenagers (grades 8-12) to explore Faith, establish Integrity, engage in meaningful Relationships through spiritual Experiences. And yes, those four key words do spell the word 'FIRE'.
