DEGREE PROGRAM

I am delighted that you are interested in the study of Missions and culture in Summit's Intercultural Studies program.

The growth of the program indicates the importance of Missions work during these eventful days of history.

God is calling us to partner with Him to bring in a HUGE harvest of souls.

The Intercultural Studies program is designed to provide the student with a solid grounding in:

  • Bible and theology (39 semester hours)
  • Practical cross-cultural ministry (48 semester hours) and
  • General Studies (36 semester hours).

With an emphasis on intercultural ministry, the program imparts rinciples that will assist the student to effectively
communicate the gospel across cultural barriers.

Why study Missions?

  1. The Bible has a missions focus from the first to last chapter! Both the OT & NT present the divine mandates to mankind to share God's ways and teachings with humanity.
  2. Jesus sent all of his disciples on a mission. He continues to call for disciples who are willing to go on a mission for him. In order to be successful in our corporate and individual missions, we need to acquire the right tools to be effective for Christ.
  3. The Holy Spirit is the director of mission. As believers filled with the Spirit, we are called upon to work with him to fulfil the missions he designs for us. God is definitely moving by His Spirit and we must keep in step with His direction.
  4. Most people on planet earth are not Christians. According to the Bible they are lost and Christ sends us to reach them with the "good news" of the gospel.
  5. We live in a world with billions of people who have a different culture and worldview than ours. To reach them with the gospel, we need special tools and knowledge to communicate cross-culturally. This requires much study, practice and experience.
  6. Canada is a very multi-cultural country with the majority of people being from diverse cultures, that are usually different from ours. 300,000 new immigrants arrive every year, most of whom do not know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. We have great opportunities to reach them if we are able to communicate effectively in terms they understand.
  7. Other religions are registering dramatic growth with Islam leading the way. To understand people who are raised with other religious affiliations, it requires study, research, and the development of missiological strategies to reach them.
ALL THAT TO SAY- WE HAVE A HUGE MISSION TO ACCOMPLISH!!
Life and ministry on earth in the 21st century is very complicated. In order to address
the complex issues and contexts of life we may be called to, training is essential.

THERE ARE MANY TRENDS AND COMPLICATED ISSUES TO SORT OUT!!!
Missiology has its own vocabulary and the following issues
require much wisdom, strategizing, and action:

Globalization;
Changing Demographics [migration; AIDS; famine; children];
Religious zeal and spirituality without Christ;
Spiritual Warfare;
The appropriate USE of Resources:
Money & Personnel;
Technology;
Creative approaches to Mission . . .

INTERCULTURAL STUDIES at SUMMIT

What kind of courses will we study?

In addition to the general Bible and Theology courses, the student will focus on Special Courses that relate to preparation for cross cultural ministry. These courses endeavour to prepare the student for work within multicultural groups in Canada as well as in foreign contexts abroad. [Whereas several mission courses are required, there are a number of electives that can be selected during the 4 year program].
The basic courses pertaining to missions preparation in SPC's curriculum are:
3 Cross Cultural Studies
3 Intercultural Communication
3 Leadership Development
3 Pastoral Theology
3 Missionary Principles and Practices
3 Intercultural Internship
3 Comparative Religions and Cults
3 Special Topics in Missions

For PAOC credentials, take as open elective or additional credits:
3 Local Church Leadership

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this 4 year program the student shall be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the various practical and theoretical aspects of the pastoral and missionary intercultural ministry in the local Canadian setting as well as in foreign contexts (which includes knowledge concerning ethnic churches, ministries, and opportunities for missionary work locally and abroad);
  • understand the various practical and theoretical aspects of cross-cultural ministry, communication, and the contextualization of the gospel message in other cultures;
  • give evidence of an in-depth understanding of the call to intercultural ministry, as well as the confidence that his/her spiritual gifts and abilities are adequate for that ministry;
  • exhibit a passion for mission work and an appreciation for intercultural relationships;
  • evaluate his/her personal strengths and weaknesses as they relate to the challenges of cross-cultural ministry;
  • understand and participate in global issues from a Christian world view; and,
  • nurture the practice of intercultural ministry in the power of the Spirit.

How the Institutional Objectives are Imparted

  1. IMPART BIBLICAL TRUTH: The Intercultural Studies Courses are based on a solid foundation of Scripture that address the subject of missions in general and specific terms. Courses which deal with culture, missiology and contextualization constantly keep relevant Scriptures in perspective in order to provide understanding of missional issues from a Biblical viewpoint.
  2. PROMOTE SPIRIT FULLNESS: In addition to chapels, prayer, and courses which specifically address pneumatology and the work of the Spirit in our lives, the Intercultural Studies Program emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in missions. It is the Holy Spirit which is integrally involved in the expansion of the church and in its missionary endeavours. Students must keep in step with the work of the Spirit in this area in order to discern His leading in their lives.
  3. TRAIN IN GODLY LIVING: The Intercultural Studies Program courses seek to emphasize the importance of character, loyalty, teamwork, and lifestyle as crucial components for effective and productive missionary work and involvement.
  4. DEVELOP STUDENTS AS HOLISTIC LEARNERS: Students will be stretched in their development as they are introduced to the incredible wealth of missiological, cultural, and anthropological resources that are available in book, journal and internet format. They will be encouraged to creatively apply that information to the enormous challenges in reaching the lost for Christ in our contemporary setting.
  5. EQUIP FOR MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH AND IN THE WORLD: Students in the Intercultural Studies Program will understand that to be effective in cross cultural ministry, they must first be active and productive in the local church and in community ministries. Before foreign fields can be considered, a well-rounded experience in local cross-cultural situations is expected. Courses in the program prepare the candidate for local and foreign ministry opportunities.
